Omega2+ strange boot LED sequence and no WiFi

  • @György-Farkas I have a USB-TTL cable like this one that I'll try tonight with the BD. I'll also try with a 5V wall adapter, should provide more power. I have an Expansion Dock in the mail, along with another Omega2 unit. I'll post results here...
    Thanks

  • @Martin-Gagnon

Powered from USB port on my laptop PC

    Wrong method to supply power.

  • @ccs-hello & @Martin-Gagnon This can be bad for two reasons. As @ccs-hello is pointing out (I think) the power source is inadequate with respect to peak current demand. In my experience I've not only seen this, but also fried >>several<<, perhaps five, expansion docks using USB power.

  • @William-Scott said in Omega2+ strange boot LED sequence and no WiFi:

fried >>several<<, perhaps five, expansion docks using USB power.

You mean PC USB power? That's how Onion.io instructs everybody to do it in the First Time Setup guide. Maybe it's time it gets updated!

  • Allright, got a serial terminal from the BD as @György-Farkas pointed out.
I don't have enough privileges to upload a file with the whole output, so here's the whole thing. Shit seems to hit the fan pretty near the end. Do you think this is user-fixable or is it simply a DOA unit?

    Many thanks,
    Martin

  • @Martin-Gagnon I think there is a WiFi AP with some strange SSID in your Omega2's neighborhood.
Rename it if it's yours or try to find a place where its signal is weak and hopefully your Omega2 - sooner or later - will boot "neatly".
If you succeed set it using the serial console with:
    wifisetup
Select '2) Type network info' - don't try '1) Scan for Wifi networks' now.
Hopefully you now got an internet access - check it with:
    ifconfig | head
    apcli0 should have a valid private inet address - eg. 192.168.xxx.xxx (or 172.16.xxx.xxx ... 172.31.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx) - from your WiFi router.
    Update your Omega2’s firmware with:
    oupgrade -l -f
It's possible that you have to repeat wifisetup again.

It seems Onion's new 'WARP CORE' Enhanced WiFi Driver can manage any strange SSID (but can not connect to such APs).

    Good luck.

Here you are an old (unfortunately too long;) post with some background info:
Kernel panic - not syncing: stack-protector: Kernel stack is corrupted in: ... and a possible reason

If you want a nicer (ie. can read more easily) text please edit your previous post.
Put a line with ``` (three backticks) before and put a line with ``` (three backticks) after your terminal log.

  • @György-Farkas said in Omega2+ strange boot LED sequence and no WiFi:

It seems Onion's new 'WARP CORE' Enhanced WiFi Driver can manage any strange SSID (but can not connect to such APs).

Is the crucial part. @Martin-Gagnon , you seem to be running the old stock firmware for your Omega2, like b160. You should download the newest firmware, put it on a USB stick and flash the Omega2 with it. Follow the tutorial https://docs.onion.io/omega2-docs/Firmware-Flashing-from-USB-storage.html for that. With the new Warp-Core WiFi driver, your error should be gone.

  • @Maximilian-Gerhardt Yes, you are right - if my present assumption is true.
Unfortunately @Martin-Gagnon - for now - only has got a Power Dock 2 (it doesn't have Serial Console) and a Breadboard Dock (it doesn't have RESET BUTTON and USB host port).
It's quite easy to "expand" the Power Dock 2 with a Serial Console (what about soldering?) or the Breadboard Dock with a FW_RST button and a USB host port but I don't know him.
I will gladly help if necessary... 🙂

  • Hi guys,
I'm glad to see people are invested in this community.
Got a second unit with an expansion dock and get the same results, the only difference is that the reboot actually happens. I just can't believe I got 2 units DOA, i'll then follow your theory about SSID's.
I will use this setup to upgrade the FW and post results here.

  • @Maximilian-Gerhardt @György-Farkas
Just flashed FW 0.2.0-b197 on one of them and got something different: it fails faster!

[ 1.353413] Fatal exception: panic in 5 seconds
[ 6.364202] Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception
    [ 6.370782] Rebooting in 1 seconds..

I didn't find the FW version in the boot log tough, just a Done! message at the end of the flashing process. Next thing will be to change environment where WiFi networks are on the low side. Here's what I get with b197 on the Omega2 (not +):
