[Resolved] Omega 2+, Powered without Dock, Shuts off after 18s

  • Hello! Was excited to get started trying out the Omega 2+ today but ran into a snag when after 18s of boot the Omega powers off.

I hooked up my Omega 2+ to an LD1117 3.3V regulator as specified in the without-dock tutorial. Connected to the regulator is an ordinary PC power supply block which provides 5V power (up to 30A). Also connected a USB cable to the TX0/RX0 serial pins of the Omega.

During boot - at the same point each time - (see below), the amber light turns off and the Omega is shut off with no further sign of life.

Based on similar issues others had, here's what I've tried:

    • Changing the Omega's IP address.
    • Swapping in different 5V adapters instead of the PC power supply mentioned above.
    • Replacing the jumper cables across the circuit with a different set.
    • Using a different Omega 2+.

Please let me know if you have any ideas I can try to get past this issue. Thank you!

  • You have a power supply problem. The LD1117S33 (if authentic) needs minimum of input 0.1uF and output 10uF capacitors.
My recommended spec is input 47uF and output 470uF to handle power inrush demand by Omega2's sudden WiFi power on in around 19-20 seconds into the boot.
Also, do not use thin power supply wires. I recommend minimum of 22 Ga.

  • on my omega2+ it's about that point the scan of wifi channels happens and there is a temp increase in current that takes place which if for any reason the power supply can not deliver the current my omega2+ will shut down. what does your 3.3 regulator deliver as far as max amps?

  • Resolved with capacitors and 22ga wire.

Okay, I added 47uF and 220uF capacitors to my circuit (on Vin and Vout of the LD1117 respectively) and swapped all the wires for 22 gauge. And... it works! Boots up completely and was able to setup wifi through web config and so on. Thank you!

    According to datasheet: max 800mA.
