MAX98090 crash on Omega2+

  • Good morning to all,
I need audio on my Omega2+, so I connected a MAX98090 chip to it. The operating system recognize it, but, after enabling i2s with the omega2-ctrl command, when I try to use it (for example with aplay), the entire system crashes and I need to switch off and on.
I tried different build version (B200, B232, B193,B180...) but the result is the same.

Please can some one help me?

  • Please post details on the crash. Might be a good idea to have a serial connection to the console so you can see specific info on a kernel panic, etc., etc., etc.

    --Bill

  • @William-Scott
Thanks William, I didn't think to connect the serial console (the ssh console crashes without any message). I will do as soon as possible.

  • @William-Scott
    Good mornig Bill,
I reproduced the issue and this is the console trace, after entering aplay message.wav:

  • @Maurizio-Messa Here is grasping at straws, but..... The time or three I've seen a failure to sync I was able to fix the problem by reflashing the device. See https://docs.onion.io/omega2-docs/factory-reset.html. Ought to take just a few minutes.

Again, grasping at straws. If that doesn't help I'll take a more detailed look at it.

    take care!
    Bill

  • @William-Scott
    Thanks bill,
I changed the Omega with another one (just removed from the box, with build b201) but the result is the same.
To solve the problem (I NEED audio) I connected an USB audio card. In this case the playback is very good, but the recorded audio is bad.. The sound is very disturbed (there is a background clatter), also changing the microphone.
Someone has experience with usb audio?
    Thanks
    Maurizio

  • Mr. Maurizio Messa, you've touch very important problem. I have the same interest to use I2S' Audio Codecs, because USB audio cards is not convenient choice. USB jack only one and it should be reserved, for example: usb-disks, service modes (firmware update), etc. And most of high-level applications need sound to be more interactive. It's one reason to use micro-computers same as Omegas and Linux-based OS that has many trivial drivers to use. I want write my high-level user-space application with DB, Network, IoT, Audio, etc. as Windows Win32 and I have no need understanding of kernel-mode and other low-level infrastructure. I can use for it STM32 Cortex's MCU's but it's need many trivial issues that has been made in Linux.

I think The Onion Team should make new Audio Shield with audio driver because it's regularly application demand.
