The ralink wifi driver doesn't seem to support the wifi standalone (client) mode. It only works when using the accesspoint mode. Securitywise i would prefer to remove the accesspoint bridge completely and replace it for a simple standalone client mode instead. Tried it for quite some time but couldn't get it to work. Has someone got this working?

It is posible to share some of those images for others to flash? Or share the menuconfig kernel config files? Then we have some sort of baseline we can built upon.

Yep, same problem here. Tried two different brands but they both (ext4 formatted) didn't work:
mmcblk: probe of mmc0:0001 failed with error -28
or
mmcblk: probe of mmc0:aaaa failed with error -28
