Spectre / Speculative CPU Issue
-
Hello Onion,
Is there a required update for Onion's base operating system to patch for the Spectre CPU bug?
Thank you,
Stephen

The Omega2 uses a MT7688AN SoC, a.ka. a 580MHz MIPS 24KEc CPU core. I don't think it's yet clear whether MIPS cores are affected, too. There are discussions going on at https://community.ubnt.com/t5/Business-Talk/Meltdown-and-Spectre-Exploits/m-p/2193652. Maybe ask Mediatek if they know more?

@Stephen-Tunney My understanding is that all cpus are in danger, but non-intel ones only have to be concerned when someone gets physical access to the device.

No not all cpus are affected, not by a very long shot. Only ones that have speculative execution (through a vulnerable cache design). And from what they are saying/implying it has to be more than just a little branch prediction/prefetch, meaning it needs more fetching than that. I cant see this core falling into that category. But will see I guess.
If you dont have an mmu/cache then you are certainly not vulnerable to this category of problem.
