How to Question: Set up a (light) sensor in a postbox for receiving notifications when letters arrive

Hello, I'm basically a noob and I would like to know how you would try to solve this problem (title) with an Omega2+ with PowerDock2 & battery set up in an building's post box, one floor beneath you - the omega would be in reach of a wifi connection. It would also be able to sleep most of the time since there is only a certain timeframe in wich the postpersonal will deliver the letters.
Have any of you guys done a similar project?
Any suggestion/recommendation on sensors?
I was maybe thinking ArduinoDock with LDR, but I am happy for further input and comments?
