Omega as a Wifi AP / Router
-
Hello. I would like to use my Omega as a wifi router/ Access point. I was thinking of connecting it to the Ethernet Expansion. I found this https://github.com/OnionIoT/uboot but am not entirely sure what it is/ if it might help me achieve what I am trying to do.
Any ideas?Thanks!

@Luis-Johannes-Schubert Uboot is a bootloader for the Omega. It's not relevant for what you are trying to do. We will be releasing two tutorials tomorrow: 1 to teach you how to set the Omega up as a simple wifi router, and another to teach you how to turn your Omega into a Wi-Fi signal range extender.
We will make them available on the wiki tomorrow.
Please stay tuned!

@Boken-Lin Can't find it on Wiki- or not yet uploaded?
-
While keeping the router idea in mind, would it be possible to plug a 3g/4g dongle in the usb socket and access/share that internet connection?
-
@Jarl-U.-Christian-Persson Not out of the box. I plugged in a huawei modem, and it didn't set up the serial device.
There are obviously some missing modules, but I have no idea which ones.

Found this http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/recipes/3gdongle
Gonna give try when I get the the time
Is there a physical way to factory restore the omega?
-
@Boken-Lin Will will the wiki be posted today. I'm really excited for this!
-
@Uwe-Press @Luis-Johannes-Schubert, sorry, still working on it! Will upload it as soon as it's done!

@Luis-Johannes-Schubert Just posted the Wiki on how to turn Omega into Wi-Fi Range Extender. Check it out here: https://wiki.onion.io/Tutorials/Using-Omega-As-Wifi-Range-Extender. Wiki on using the Omega as a router will be posted shortly!

Hi guys
I just discovered a simpler way to use the omega as a wireless range extender - without using ssh/serial connection.
-
Power up your omega connected to the minidock.
-
Open a browser and go to the console @192.168.3.1 and log-in using the default settings or if you have already changed them use your new login
-
Go to the "Settings" app
-
On the dashboard on the left go to "Wif-fi settings" - here you need to scan and setup the omega to connect to your home network (main router/home router) - to do so search for the correct SSID broadcast by your router and set the correct security type and corresponding password. After you are done click the "Configure Wi-fi button"
-
Next, go to the "Wi-Fi AP settings" on the dashboard on the left. Here you have to first check the "Enable AP Mode" - Next, set an SSID of your choice - This will be the wifi network (range extended) that you will connect to. Set a security type and password. I normally keep these the same as that of the main router for simplicity. Next, click "Configure AP". It may or may not do anything at this stage. However the settings are made.
-
I would suggest a reboot of the omega at this stage.
-
And thats it!! now just connect your computer/smartphone to the wifi SSID you set with the password you chose and you are on the internet!

@Nayan Ha! Thanks for sharing! Mind if we add this to the wiki?
-
@Boken-Lin ... Sure... please do!

@Nayan Cool tip Effectively once this is done the Omega IS a range extender.
I just realised I was effectively already using my Omega as a range extender without realising it since I always use my Omega like this.- So long as your Omega is within range of your router
- AND your computer is in range of your Omega
- You will have internet access on your computer even if your computer is not in range of your router
The only thing I would emphasise is that you should set a security type and password on your Wi-Fi AP settings otherwise anyone could pirate on to your internet access by connecting to your Omega Wi-Fi
Just realised I hadn't done this
