Airplay Server: USB Audio and auto-start for shairport

  • Hi Folks,

I would like to convert one of my Omega2s to a Shairport server for music in my kitchen. I've got a speaker with a standard 3.5mm port, so all I need is a USB audio device. I'm following the guide below and I have 2 questions:
    https://wiki.onion.io/Projects/How-To-Stream-music-Using-Airplay/1.Installing-ShairportSync

    1. Since they aren't offered on the store anymore I need a compatible audio device. Would this work ? https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Headphone-Microphone-Aluminum-Compatibility/dp/B00NMXY2MO

    2. What do I need to do to get shairport to start at boot? Just in case of power outages or whatever, it'd be nice to have the shairport server start at boot so I don't have to ssh in and start it up manually.

    Thank you!

    1. I think any standard USB-Audio converter will work out the box, it's just a USB device. The system does have to have drivers for that card, of-course, but I think USB-cards are pretty much plug-and-play. I have personally used this and plays the audio (not very qualititive the DAC is horrible)
    2. Since this is a standard Linux system there are numerous ways to implement a auto-start program. You could use a init.d startup script as described in here or here. Just look out that your script runs after network connectivity has been established, or wait in your script a few seconds. Googling "linux start program at boot" will give you some ideas.

  • Thank you! Just don't wanna spend money on something that won't work is all so I figured I'd ask the experts here šŸ™‚
