Can the Omega2+ "walkie talkie"?

I was hoping to use the omega2+ as a walkie talkie system for my sons and I. I wanted to make clients out of the omegas that perhaps passed through a server or something over wifi. I haven't really found a solution that I think is going to work.

My first hope was something like mumble over wifi with usb audio, but that doenst seem to be panning out.

I am open to Software Defined Radio ideas as well.

There are projects out there for raspberrypi (talkiepi) that can do this, but I like a little more challenge.

I appreciate any feedback or advice on this topic.
