Boot process fail

  • Im using Onion2+ without dock. I power it from a lab power supply with thick wires and a 100uF cap near power pins. I also connect a serial adapter to TX and RX pins to see boot log.

After power up i see ALWAIS the same log, after last line power comsumption drop to about 50mA and nothing else happends.

What can i do? How can i update if i cant get the board to start? Can i boot from an SD card?

    Here my boot log:

  • Just past 31 seconds is indicative of a power supply issue as well as the symptoms. That's ironic as you clearly took some precautions. Here are some thoughts:

    1. Thick wires - good as this lowers inductance. If there's any appreciable wire length, twist them up. The twisted pair won't benefit you with this issue but will make your system less susceptible to nearby emitters as well as be less of a transmitter. This is a good general practice.

    2. 100uF bypass near power pins - good to have a nice size bulk cap nearby. You may need smaller caps as well for their higher frequency discharge capabilities. I doubt that is the issue.

    3. The lab power supply is where I would point my suspicion. What is the voltage (presumably 3.3 as you're applying directly to device)? What is the peak current capability of the power supply? Does the supply have a current limiting feature and, if so, is it on?

The O2+ has a large peak in required current as the WiFi system comes up, right around 31 seconds. Likely something in your general power supply circuit is limiting charge to the device as peak charge is required.

    Best of luck!
    Bill

  • @Edu I agree with @William-Scott power consumption may drop because the device has hung. Starting wifi creates a spike. Try plugging your device into a computer USB port and see how it boots.

  • OMG! Omega2 is really sensible to power drops. I finally use an oscilloscope to monitor power and see some small sag while booting before hang.

I solve the problem sordering directly power wires, maybe my connectors do not touch correctly or dont have enought contact surface.

  • @Edu I'm not sure Omega is any more sensitive than the alternatives, it's a question of understanding the platform and designing in accordance with the parameters.
