Omega keeps resetting before boot

  • Hello. Finally got my Omegas. And it don't work as expected. I've put it on voltage (my multimeter says 3.27V) and it goes through boot process and then restarts itself without reason. I don't know whether you need any other information, so serial log follows. I was unable to find, how to format long log, so I'm sorry, but there it is in raw format. It does this again and again until I disconnect it from electrictity.

  • @Mike-Es Looks like bad power-supply, ain't providing enough current and your omega crashes.

  • @WereCatf: Thanks for your reply. It was the first thing I was thinking about. I have a linear regulator (I don't know the exact model right now, its TO-220 package, rated 2A) with 17V power supply (oficially 12V; regulator needs really big heatsink with this voltage šŸ™‚ ). The chip gives constant 3.27V, with or without load. I had even tried to add a capacitor (22uF) and nothing had changed. I have three omegas (one plus, two "normal") and I have tried both "normal" with the same result.

How much current do omega need?

(PS: This forum is one big PITA!)

  • @Mike-Es The Omega2 can spike to something around 250mA when it brings the WiFi up, if there are no extra peripherals to power, like e.g. USB or microSD -- with those, it'd obviously be higher. How much current does your 17V power-supply give out?

  • If information on label is correct, then it should be able to put out about 500mA. I will try to measure it in few days.

  • @Mike-Es I had the same problem of resetting over and over during the boot. The PS is a bench supply from Velleman PS1503SBU. It's rated at 0-15 volts, 3 amps It has a voltage and current control. Set it for 5 vlots out. I watched the DC on a scope set to AC and 100 mv during boot. When the Omega2 resetted, tried to see a voltage interruption or glitch. Nothing. Set scope to different horizontal times. It must happen so fast. Once it booted fully. Tried again, same problem. Now using a Power Dock with 1200 mah lithium battery. No problem.

  • As @WereCatf said, there's a spike in power draw the moment the Omega2 tries to bring the WiFi up.

And the reset circuitry seems to be very sensitive to even slight drops in supply voltage.

I had exactly the same situation (endless reboots) in a test with a really stable and way powerful enough lab supply - but I had the voltage set a tiny tiny bit too low. I don't recall the exact value but something ridiculous like 3.25V instead of 3.3V. It was totally reproducible, going up less than a tenth of a volt made the difference.

So it might well be that your 3.27V is simply not enough.

  • @luz It's not just the voltage, 500mA power-supply is quite little, if it then has to go through a linear voltage-regulator, too. That leaves very little headroom for the Omega2 and he needs a cap on both input and output, not just on the output, and the latter one definitely should be more than 22uF.

  • @WereCatf yes, of course you are right. Proper caps before and after the regulators, and also good, short wiring to the power pins of the Omega are most important!

My point was just that even if the supply wiring, amperage and caps are ok (which was the case in my setup), the Omega2 is still sensitive to a little bit less than 3.3V. I guess that the network-on spike inevitably causes some voltage drops within the Omega2's internal power wiring and/or the reset trigger level is really very near 3.3V.

Anyway, don't forget you can always look how Onion did it on the original dock and mini-dock.

  • Hola guys! Thanks for your replies. I've tried today to use better power source and slighly higher voltage and much bigger cap.

I've used my soundcard power supply (9V, 4A) and MP1584-based chinese step down regulator and 2.2mF capacitor. Voltage was 3.33V.
And behavior was absolutely the same.

... and, while writing this post I've realized, that I have significant voltage drop on these "arduino jumper wires". 3.3V on regulator output, 3.1 and even lower at end of 10cm (+- 4in)!

So, I shortened the wires to extreme short jumpers... and now, IT WORKS!

  • Mike,

Put a 2200uF 6V electrolytic capacitor at the output end of the voltage regulator.
Also, always use thicker power supply wires to alleviate the situation a bit.

It's the brown out condition where the supply voltage drop in a very brief transit when the Omega 2 board demands more power. The Omega 2 board along really needs a stable 300mA power supply for a sustained period of time.
