Omega2p warp core boot problem

  • @Grag if you have another way to power the dock it would at least eliminate this as a cause. My Microsoft Surface cannot reliably power an Omega Pro, I will get various kernel panics and CRC issues, it also performs poorly in charging my phone. If I plug the same Omega Pro into my older Lenovo T530 everything is good. I tested several USB hubs and seen similar issues, the Omega needs sufficient power or it will do lots of wierd things. At least this is a place to start.

  • @crispyoz well today i tried using another one board, it seems that the problem is not powering. Moreover, I measured the voltage on both power pins of the onion and they are 3.33 v during the boot.
    BTW I watched ifconfig and find out that ra0 is not found in there.

    root@(none):/# ifconfig -a
    eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 4E:7D:57:31:EA:FF
              inet addr:192.168.1.1  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

    root@(none):/# ifconfig -v
    ifconfig: -v: error fetching interface information: Device not found

    Looks like the cause is wifi module does not starting up

  • @Grag the next step I would perform is download the latest firmware version from http://repo.onion.io/omega2/images
    Then use the serial console to run sysupdate -n -v <firmware file>
    Still make sure you have sufficient power to the dock, if you check the power draw will fluctuate during boot anyway.

  • @crispyoz thank you, i don't knew about that repo! I tried the last one "omega2p-v0.2.2-b202.bin" and it crushes the same:

    Also i find out onion every boot have been trying to say it haha:

    Initializing MT7688 GPIO system.
    wifi mac address = 000000000000.

    i don't know what does that mean at all, but i'm pretty shure it is not good

  • @Grag I think you may have a hardware issue, I might be wrong but this is what I suspect. You can see the MAC address by this:

    cat /sys/class/net/ra0/address

    if the the above command returns a valid MAC address you could run this script manually to fix the settings.

    #!/bin/sh

    . /lib/ramips.sh
    board=$(ramips_board_name)

    m1=$(cat /sys/class/net/ra0/address | awk -F':' '{ print $5 }' | awk '{print toupper($0)}')
    m2=$(cat /sys/class/net/ra0/address | awk -F':' '{ print $6 }' | awk '{print toupper($0)}')

    uci -q batch <<-EOF > /dev/null
    set system.@system[0].hostname=Omega-$m1$m2
    set system.@led[0].sysfs="$board:amber:system"
    set system.@led[0].trigger='default-on'
    commit system
    set wireless.@wifi-iface[0].ssid='Omega-$m1$m2'
    set wireless.sta.led='${board}:blue:wifi'
    commit wireless
    EOF

  • @crispyoz NOOooo it doesn't. Just 00:00:00:00:00:00. Looks like i need new omega šŸ™‚ Anyway, thank you very much for helping!

  • @Grag I'm sorry to see that. Maybe someone else has another suggestion. I always like to order 2 of everything, that makes it easier to swap things in and out to help troubleshoot things.

    Sorry I cannot be of more help.

  • For future reference. I had the same issue on an Omega2Pro yesterday. The factory partition was was messed up, I cloned another device and this fixed the issue, but perhaps the radio is not perfectly calibrated.

  • I had three dozen O2P with this issue in our manufacturing facility. I recovered with this procedure:
    https://github.com/OnionIoT/Onion-Docs/blob/master/Omega2/Documentation/Doing-Stuff/Advanced/Firmware-Flashing-Web-Recovery.md
    I loaded b258 (the latest at this time 9/5/24). This worked.
    If I re-install b233 (the latest "stable" build loaded by" oupgrade -force") the error returns. This is highly repeatable. Therefore, there is more to it than "factory partition messed up".

    Hi @mikeH, I think the original post and your issue have two separate root causes.

    In your case, it looks like you've run into an incompatibility that older builds of the v0.3.3 Omega firmware have with Omega2 modules produced since November 2022 (date codes 2245 and later, MAC addresses starting with 88:1E:59).

    We recommend updating or rebuilding your firmware so that it is based on the latest v0.3.4 b257 version of the Onion firmware and uses WiFi Warp Core v1.2.
    This latest firmware resolves the incompatibility, ensuring normal device operation.

    See our blog post on this here: https://onion.io/firmware-compatibility-issue-notice-jul-2023/

    Hope this helps!

  • @Lazar-Demin
    Thank you very much. That explains a lot. I am sorry I did not see the notice on this before. I now know how to avoid this in our factory without having to manually re-flash anything.

    The following:
    https://api.onioniot.com/firmware/omega2p/stable
    is queried by the Omega to determine the latest "stable" version. The result is:
    {
    "version": "0.3.2",
    "url": "http://repo.onioniot.com/omega2/images/omega2p-v0.3.2-b233.bin",
    "build": 233,
    "device": "omega2+",
    "stable": true
    }
    Is there a reason why the latest stable is still reported as b233 when b257 is required by newer hardware?

    Thanks, and regards,
    Mike Hanson

    @mikeH happy to help!

    The firmware API returning b233 as stable was due to an oversight. This has been fixed, it now returns:

    {
      "version": "0.3.4",
      "url": "http://repo.onioniot.com/omega2/images/omega2p-v0.3.4-b258.bin",
      "build": 258,
      "device": "omega2+",
      "stable": true
    }

    Thanks for bringing this to our attention
