Compiling optional packages (i2c-exp-driver)

Currently the i2c-exp-driver currently supports the Microchip MCP23008 GPIO chip. I would like to add support for the TI PCF8574N GPIO chip as well, but I couldn't figure out how to setup my local development environment. I've studied the Cross-Compile tutorial at length, but still haven't figured it out.
Can someone please help me get a development environment setup so I can add the PCF8574N GPIO driver?

I tried submitting i2c-exp-driver to cloud compile, but it just hangs. Could the compile server be down again?
