Dead Onion
-
My onion died only a couple days after getting it and playing with it. It was working great, I got it up and running and then it started making a sort-of squeaking sound. Now it wont even boot. Is there any kind of warranty on the hardware? Any help would be appreciated.
Thx.

Ive noticed the onion makes very high pitched sounds. I assumed this was one of the components and was normal. Having seen your post im now worried.

I guess mine also dead. Today I had 244 and clicked update, as soon as update I ve lost ssh connection. After waiting 20 minutes and still offline I have cut the power and restarted it.
Now it blinks just like normal & blink stops as usual, I guess boots. But I dont see its ip at my home router's client list. Its own AP function was disabled already so i dont see it's ap name...
Could someone help me? What should I do? Can I flash it back or does it have a reset option?

Hi @Kasey-Batterman, I'm so sorry about your broken Omega. Yes, we do have warranty. Would you be able to create a ticket on our help desk? We will replace your Omega for you.
@Craig-Mayhew: It's not normal for the Omega to make a high pitch sound. Please create a ticket on our help desk, and we will get it replaced for you ASAP.
Our help desk is here: https://onion.freshdesk.com/support/home
@esunayg: Can you connect the Omega to your serial terminal and copy and paste the output here? Let's see if we can debug it.
-
@Boken-Lin I dont know to connect omega via serial terminal. Are there any guide?
-
@esunayg the connecting to Omega via serial terminal guide can be found on our wiki

I have a similar case, I did something to my kernel that I'm not getting anything accept lo on ifconfig. So I can't connect thru wifi, only thru serial. Anyway to reflash thru serial?
-
@ArgusR See reply I have just made to your other post: https://community.onion.io/topic/445/usb-ip/12
-
@Kit-Bishop Solved, thanks
-
ok, new kind of dead: led do not stop blinking, ever, serial doesn't show much, doesn't let type, reset button and long reset doesn't respond. Ideas?
-
@ArgusR what was the last thing you did before this started happening?
Seems like it's stuck in a boot loop, if you're able to get to the uboot during boot, you can reflash the firmware using the ethernet expansion
-
I'm trying to install some modules from a differente kernel 3.18.20. Ok, I can get to uboot, but I don't have a ethernet expansion. Any way to flash it by serial?
-
@Lazar-Demin Thank you for your help My onion is back online again!!
-
@esunayg no problem, glad it worked out!
@ArgusR No way to flash by serial right now, but if you have two Omegas you can 'make' an ethernet expansion: https://community.onion.io/topic/130/debrick-with-serial/8
@Johannes-Zellner got it to work: https://community.onion.io/topic/130/debrick-with-serial/11

@Lazar-Demin by the way, I've found a web UI bug (kind of).
Just figured out that my problem was not a firmware update problem. I suppose it is a web UI problem. When I try to repair my onion via serial, I 've seen that it boots regularly but doesn't connect to my home AP. On config file my wifi password was normal but weirdly SSID has changed to default "omega"s name. I was changing settings on my omega while it lost connection. And my browser (opera) saves passwords on omega's web ui. I guess it overwrited because of password save. So it lost the AP connection. Hope this helps.

@esunayg did this happen on the console or the setup wizard?
-
@Lazar-Demin it happened on console.

@Lazar-Demin Hi, my second Omega is on shipping right now, I will try as soon as I receive. But with chip is used in your ethernet expansion, any chance that I could use a enc28j60 based ethernet module as a eth expansion?
-
@ArgusR I've never tried out that specific chip, but any Ethernet breakout should work!
