It really depends what your demands are regarding WiFi. If you can live with mediocre WiFi performance (for now), then use LEDE. You can build everything that is on the original Omega FW that way, except for the wifi driver. Onion uses a proprietary driver they can't publish, stock LEDE uses the fully open sourced, but not yet fully fine tuned, mt76 driver. For all of my Omega2 based applications I built my own distro / FW image from LEDE, tailored to the use case. There is a learning curve to LEDE, but once you get a feel for it, it's a really nicely organized distro builder for tiny platforms. For example you can start here, read about LEDE on their site and of course search this forum, which has a lot about custom FW builds. If you want to get something as close as possible to original Onion FW, then you can start with their LEDE tree which is finally publicly available.

Counterfeit? That is odd and the first time I've heard of this. Did @op purchase directly from Onion? Weird!

@Eric-Min Omegas possibly run warm but not hot, unless powered at more than the unit's rating of 3.3- 3.6 volts. USB power is 5 volts ... is your Omega in one of the Onion docks, or did you power it directly with that USB power source? If not sure, can your use a VOM to measure the voltage across Omega pins GND and VIN?

But what you can do after the boot sequence is to mount another file system in your USB key, and run Omega compiled apps and use data stored there. if I expand the filesystem to occupy my usb drive, what happens if I boot the omega with the usb drive not plugged in? You should see an error in your system log file informing you that the mount command failed.

@Matthias-Nowak We seem to generally concur that there are some issues etc. that could be fruitfully addressed. One final comment on all this in relation to pins 15, 16 and 17: While these pins on the Omega and Omega2 are not exposed on the Expansion Dock, they are used on the Expansion Dock for control of the expansion LED: Pin 15 - LED blue Pin 16 - LED green Pin 17 - LED red However, note also that with the Power Dock there is no LED and so these pins are neither used nor exposed. It seems a shame to have 3 pins not exposed just to control an onboard LED that isn't always available

@Eric-Min Welcome to the community. Just have a look in the Wiki there it has a project section. The audio streaming project looks not so complicated and you will need just a usb audiocard. Just use it as it is .. opkg. Make a postit close to the monitor to remember the command I also prefer apt/apt-get but if you want to work with several Distributions of linux you have to get used that there are a lot of packet-managements.
